Provincial Symbols of Québec

Bird

The provincial bird of quebec is the snowy owl. The snowy owl is found above the tree line in the tundra of quebec. It's main food source are lemmings. An average snowy owl eats around three to five snowy owls per day. Unlike most owls, which are nocturnal, The snowy owl is active day and night. the snowy owl is on the top end of the food and ecological chain. Snowy owls are found in the northern hemisphere, mainly in Russia, Canada, and the upper part of the USA. For Canada's summer months, the snowy owl resides in the arctic territories, but comes further south into provinces such as Quebec for the winter months.

Flower

The flower of quebec is a Blue Flag Iris, which resembles the fleur de lis. It is found in wet areas of woods and meadows, as well as along edges of lakes and ponds. It can be found from southwest Manitoba to the atlantic provinces. This flower grows form 60-90 centimeters in maturity. The blooms of the flower attract bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects. They also provide shelter to other animals that live along the shores of the ponds. The plant has a high potential for poison, but no reports have been made. In fact, Native aboriginals used this plant for many natural remedies.

Fleur de lis

The Fleur de lis is a french stylized item mainly associated with the crown and royalty. It was used by Jaques Cartier, one of the first explorers to Canada, as his flag. Louis VII was believed to be the first to use this emblem on his shield, but it may have been used as a banner long before. The reduction to three fleur de lis was commanded by Charles V in 1376 to honor holy trinity. The shape of the fleur de lis has changed many times over the years to fit the abilities of craftsmen and artisans at the time it was made.
